How to Create Textures in 3D

  • Mapping one image across multiple objects in your scene to create variations on that texture (also called tiling).

Hybrid texturing combines both procedural and image-based techniques within one workflow. This gives you flexibility when trying out different looks for your scene’s materials because you can adjust how much each method influences the final result.

Procedural Texturing

Procedural texturing is the process of creating a texture without using an image file. It’s often used for tileable textures.

You can create procedural textures by using 3D texturing software, or you can use programs like Substance Designer, which are dedicated to creating procedural textures.

Image Texturing

The first step to texturing a model is importing an image. You can use any image editor to do this, but it’s recommended that you use one with at least some level of 3D functionality. This is because most of the other steps will be done inside your 3D software, so you can get used to using it now.

Once your texture has been loaded into the 3D modeling software, set its texture mode to projective or perspective—whichever makes more sense for what you want out of your texture. For example, a portrait would usually be made in perspective, while a landscape would be made in projection since it doesn’t matter from which angle you view a landscape (it’s all painted on flat paper).

Hybrid Texturing

Hybrid texturing can be used for both organic and non-organic shapes.

If you decide to use hybrid texturing, it’s recommended that you use 3D texturing software for generating your base shapes, which will then be exported as a normal map for further refinement in Photoshop.
